The Shelly 3EM is a powerful smart home energy monitor, into the Eve app using a simple Homebridge plugin. Whether you’re looking to keep track of your home’s energy consumption or optimize your energy usage, this step-by-step guide will walk you through the entire process.

And at the same time I am super excited to show you how I’ve integrated the Shelly 3EM – a smart energy monitor, into my smart home setup.  And,  thanks to this handy Homebridge plugin. I can effortlessly track my home’s energy consumption right from the Eve app,

This product comes from a reputable company called Shelly, which focuses on smart electrical products for both residential and commercial applications. Unlike some brands, Shelly doesn’t simply rebrand white-label products—they been always designing their own.

The Shelly 3EM is a compact device designed to be installed in your main electrical box, where it monitors energy usage across three phases. This makes it perfect for keeping track of your entire home’s electricity consumption.

It’s Wi-Fi-enabled, allowing it to send real-time data directly to your smart home system, such as Home Assistant, or the dedicated Shelly app. However, for us Apple users, HomeKit doesn’t currently support energy characteristics. I even checked the latest documentation, and there’s no mention of the term “Energy.”

But thanks to the Homebridge plugin, we  can still expose these consumption values to the Eve app.

You might ask why I’m monitoring our electricity usage. It’s for one simple reason:

  1. To become more energy efficient by comparing the overall power generated with our overall consumption. From that data, I can also:
  2. Identify any energy leaks
  3. Potentially Save money on our energy bills

And don’t worry—I’ll have a video coming soon that explains how we set up our eco-friendly home, including solar panels, rainwater collection, and other sustainable elements.

And additionally, I’d like to also share the five benefits I’ve seen by    using this device over other white-label branded manufacturers.

1. Reliable and Accurate Energy Monitoring:

The Shelly 3EM is praised for its accuracy in measuring energy consumption, which is crucial for anyone relying on this data for energy management.

2. Open API and Integration Flexibility:

One of the standout features of this device is its open API, which allows for an extensive integration. You can integrate the device into various ecosystems, including Home Assistant, Homebridge, or even MQTT.

3. Robust Cloud and Local Control Options:

Shelly devices give users the choice between cloud-based control or entirely local operation. This dual capability ensures that you retain control over your data and operations.

4. Regular Firmware Updates:

Shelly is known for providing regular firmware updates that improve functionality, security, and compatibility.

The last and perhaps most important benefit is:

5. Compliance with International Standards:

All of Shelly devices, are built to meet international safety and performance standards. This compliance ensures that the devices are reliable and safe to use in a variety of environments and are less likely to encounter issues with local regulations.

Thanks to these benefits, I still believe that the Shelly 3EM is a compelling choice for anyone looking for a reliable, feature-rich, and versatile energy monitoring solution for their smart home.

Now, let’s get back to the fun part—making all of this work with the Eve app. Here’s what we’ll need:

1. A Shelly 3EM—installed and connected by a professional. Once the device is connected to the relevant phases and neutral wires, check that it’s reporting status in the Shelly app or the web app.

2. To enable the integration with Eve, we’ll be using Homebridge running on a Raspberry Pi. I’ve also left links in the description for installing Homebridge on multiple hardware platforms.

So let’s not waste any time—let’s jump into the tutorial!
